Specifically, Latin American women in the American mainstream media are exoticised and hypersexualized. According to a Colorado State University study, Latinas are victims of a broken educational pipeline, meaning they are underrepresented in honors, advanced placement and gifted and talented programs. This disparity, the researchers argue, is not due to a lack of intellectual capabilities, but rather a deficiency in opportunities. As women, racial and ethnic minorities and members of a low socioeconomic status group, Latinas posses a triple minority status, all of which impact their educational opportunities. The Puerto Rican Bronx native has been a vocal advocate for a more equitable U.S. and has continued to lead efforts for tuition-free public colleges and universities, guaranteed living wage for all Americans and Medicare-for-all. The Hispanic population tends to be younger and earlier in their careers, and there is a “disproportionate representation” of Latinas in service jobs, which tend to be low paying. Hispanic/Latina women are more likely to seek care for breast cancer in an emergency situation, once advanced-stage breast cancer begins to cause pain. At this stage, the disease is usually less treatable and usually has a worse prognosis. While this doesn’t completely explain the increase in breast cancer rates when women of this ethnic background move to the United States, different genetic tendencies could provide some information about why the disease is different in women of Hispanic/Latino background.

But there’s a more insidious side to this kind of stereotyping — besides being inaccurate, these types of depictions have been used to blame high rates of teen pregnancies in the community on the “spicy Latina.”

While Latinas have predominantly been excluded from research on body image and eating disorders, they are not immune from developing disordered eating habits and mental illnesses like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. On the contrary, despite rarely being reported or diagnosed,recent studiesshow that Latinas have eating disorders and body image issues at rates comparable to or greater than non-Latina whites. If you were to accept everything you heard about Latinas, you might think they were scheming and hypersexual, yet socially conservative women whose “equal educational opportunities” and “competitive purchasing power” signify their “arrival.”

They listened to leaders like Aurora Lucero, daughter of the first secretary of state and a well-known author and advocate of bilingualism, and educator Nina Otero-Warren, who told them that the suffrage campaign also needed to address Spanish-speaking women. They insisted that the campaign include bilingual publications and speeches, often helping with the translations. Hispanic suffragists were proud advocates of their language and culture.

As a result, Latino immigrants struggle to gain health care once they enter the United States. Non-citizen Latinos often avoid hospitals and clinics for fear of deportation, leading to an increased risk of preventable diseases such as tuberculosis and Hepatitis in this population. Additionally, Latino health deteriorates as this population assimilates into unhealthy lifestyles associated with lower socioeconomic American populations. The Hispanic paradox refers to the medical research indicating that Latino immigrants enter the United States with better health, on average, than the average American citizen, but lose this health benefit the longer they reside in the United States. It is important to note that this health paradox affects both male and female populations of Latinos.
